Federal Review

Improving Regulation and Regulatory Review Initiative

On Jan. 18, President Obama signed an executive order for “Improving Regulation and Regulatory Review.”  To read the executive order in its entirety, visit http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/01/18/improving-regulation-and-regulatory-review-executive-order.

In this executive order, federal agencies have been given 120 days to develop a preliminary plan that describes how they will review their regulations and identify rules that may be ineffective, insufficient or excessively burdensome.  The federal agencies would then take this list of rules of concern and determine if they can be modified, streamlined, expanded or repealed to make the regulatory program(s) more effective or less burdensome in achieving regulatory objectives.

The Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection (DEP) supports this objective. To ensure Kentucky’s ideas and perspectives are represented by this effort, the department will be compiling and then sharing with the federal government a list of the key federal environmental rules and policies that the agency believes are impediments to Kentucky’s ability to provide for environmental protection, public health and economic growth.

The department invites Kentucky stakeholders to help the agency identify these problematic federal environmental rules.  If you have input that you wish the department to consider for inclusion in its list of problematic rules, please visit www.rules.speedsurvey.com.  All comments must be submitted by March 31, 2011.
