Department for Environmental Protection

Welcome

Kentucky is a land with diverse environments and abundant resources. These features are some of the most prized treasures of Kentucky residents. Kentucky is well known for its varied geology, including expansive cave and karst systems. It has valuable coalfields, critical wetlands and lush forests. Kentucky’s 90,000 miles of stream system provides one of the most expansive and complex stream systems in the nation. In addition, Kentucky’s landscape possesses an abundance of recreational opportunities that have drawn people from all parts of the world. Each of these remarkable natural resources has helped shape Kentucky’s economy, culture and history.

These resources also provide us with the responsibility of good stewardship. Kentucky’s residents and businesses must work together to preserve the resource quality and diversity that make Kentucky a great place to live, work and play. As Kentucky continues to grow and prosper, it is important that Kentucky’s natural resources, the cornerstone of Kentucky’s success, are not left behind.

The Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection (DEP) has been given the duty to lead this effort. It is the agency’s mission to protect and enhance Kentucky’s environment. The department will set clear priorities and will work with Kentucky’s citizens to keep Kentucky one of the most remarkable states in the nation.

The department invites you to join us in this effort. By working together, we will successfully keep Kentucky's environment as one of our greatest treasures.
